HORACE RESLEY, OF CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,127, dated March 6, 1888.
Application filed April 6, 1887. Serial No. 233,910. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE RESLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of Alleghany and State of Maryland, have invented certain, new and useful Improvements in Pavement-Lights; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a top view with a portion shown in horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
The invention relates to improvements in vault or pavement lights for the purpose of illuminating compartments below the surface of the ground; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the frame or sash of the glass set in an opening in the pavement in the usual manner, and provided with the cells or openings B for the panes or blocks of glass C. Each cell is circular in outline, and its upper orifice, b, is larger than its lower orifice, b'. The edge of the cell between the two orifices is provided with a circumferential groove, D, the floor d of which is horizontal. The side d' of the groove D inclines upward and inward from the floor d, and the groove forms a seat for an elastic ring, hereinafter described.
The blocks of glass C are each cylindrical, having a diameter just small enough to pass through the lower orifice of a cell, B, and a circumferential flange, c, around its upper end of just sufficient diameter to fit easily in the upper orifice, b.
The upper surface of the block C is preferably rounded, and the part c' of the block where the flanges c and body meet is rounded or curved, as shown, so as to fit upon the elastic cylindrical ring E, seated in the groove D. Below this curvature or neck the lower portion of the block is slightly swelled outward, as at Z.
The ring E is cylindrical in cross-section, and is of rubber or other suitable material,
and has an external diameter somewhat larger than the upper orifice,
b, so that when sprung through said orifice fits snugly in the
groove D and rests on the floor d thereof. When the ring is in
place, its inner circumference projects inward beyond the edge of the
inner or lower orifice, b', so that when the cylindrical block
is forced downward in place it binds on the rubber ring and causes the
latter to bind in the groove D, while the flange c rests on the
upper surfaces of the ring within the orifice b. A strong,
water-tight, and flexible joint is thus made, and one that will give
to the impact of the foot or other jar, so that it cannot be readily
Should the glass be broken, it can be quickly and readily detached and a perfect one substituted therefor.
The frame A is made of any desired style and shape.
When the block is in position, it is not easily lifted out because of the engagement between its swelled portion and the rubber ring and the latter with the inclined wall of the groove; but it can be removed more easily, when necessary, by a twisting or turning motion.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--
1. In a vault or pavement window, the combination of the frame provided with the openings or cells B, having the upper or outer orifices, b, larger than their inner or lower orifices, b', and provided with the grooves D, having the floors d, and inclined sides d' of the glass blocks C, provided with the flanges c, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the cell having circumferential grooves formed with a wall upward and inward, and a cylindrical glass block having an upper circumferential flange and a swell portion below its neck portion, of a rubber ring cylindrical in cross section laid in said groove and engaging said block below its flange, substantially as specified.
