Baltimore Glass Manufacturing Company, 1896 to 1903 (est.), shut down by
court order for patent infringement-- caught using a copy of the Kribs
press for making their insulators, a device patented by Brookfield, who
won their molds and press(es?) in the lawsuit. Brookfield then reworked
the molds to remove the old embossing, filling in the "B.G.M. CO." with
blot-outs and re-engraving with "NEW YORK". "BROOKFIELD" was added to
the previously blank other side. Most B.G.M. insulators are purple, with a few in off-clear and lemon; the Brookfield units are almost always light aqua, anything else is rare. B.G.M. glass is notoriously fragile and the insulators are usually chipped; the darker the shade, the more likely the damage it seems. The better condition pieces are often lighter colored, perhaps because they led more sheltered lives? B.G.M. molds are unique; the insulators made with them have a distinctive profile unlike any other. Study the pictures below paying particular attention to the profiles and the blot-outs will start to stand out on a crowded table of aquas at shows. |
