Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,510, dated January 21, 1879; application filed November 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
    Be it known that I, JAMES I. HEALEY, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Vault-Lights, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
    Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same.
    This invention has relation to that class of floor or vault lights, vault-covers, sidewalks, &c., in which panels of glass are secured by a suitable cement or plastic material within a metal frame; and the invention consists in a netting of metallic wires, strips of wood, rubber, leather, twine, or other suitable material encircling, or partially encircling, the glass panels, to prevent the glass and cement from working loose and breaking up, as will be hereinafter described.
    In the accompanying drawings, A represents a metal frame of any suitable form and construction, and which, if desired, may have suitable compartnients or recesses for the reception of the glass panels B. The panels B may be of any suitable form and size, and, if desired, may be formed with flanges upon their lower end. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to any particular form or construction of panel, or of the metal frame, as they can be variously changed
in form or modified in their general construction without departing from the gist of my invention.
    After the panels are placed in position upon the metal frame A, metallic wires C are made to encircle the panels, said wires passing through the flanges a of the frame and suitably fastened, after which the cement D, generally used for the purpose, is applied in the ordinary manner.
    Although I have described and shown metallic wires as being the most practical means of accomplishing the object sought--viz., that of holding the cement and glass from getting loose and breaking up-- it is evident that in place of the wires a netting of leather strips, twine, strips of wood, rubber, or any other suitable material could be used to form a net-work for the purpose described.
    Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--
    The means, substantially as herein described, of preventing the glass panels and cement of vault-lights, &c., from working loose and breaking up, which consist in a netting of a suitable material encircling, or partially encircling, said panels, as set forth.
    In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
