HISTORY OF THE PLANT

In 1806, James Lee erected the first glass factory in Millville, New Jersey. The factory changed hands many times between 1806 and 1834 when purchased by Whitall & Brother later known as Whitall-Tatum & Company.

In 1832, Frederick Schetter built glass-works, about one-third of a mile below the town, now known as South Millville. This factory also changed hands many times before it was finally purchased by Whitall-Tatum & Company in 1854.

Desirous of getting into the glass business, to tie in with the making of closures, Armstrong Cork Company purchased the glass plants in June of 1938.

When Armstrong Cork Company purchased the Whitall-Tatum Company, both plants were combined into one at the South Millville location and the Glasstown plant was dismantled and the property sold to the City of Millville.

In order to make this consolidation without sacrificing capacities, it was necessary to build two new furnaces at South Millville. These new furnaces were fully equipped with IS machines.

Armstrong continued to make glass containers, both flint and amber, and it was "business as usual" for 30 years. Armstrong's largest Glass Container Plant, the South Millville Plant, produced containers for the Food, Beverage, Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical trades, and glass insulators for the Electrical and Communications industries.

On April 1, 1969, Armstrong Cork Company, Glass Container Division ended their glass manufacturing with the sale of the business to Kerr Glass Manufacturing Corporation. With the purchase of the Armstrong Glass Plants, Kerr became one of the nations largest Glass Container Manufacturers.
