Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,201, dated December 2, 1873; application filed October 22, 1873. CASE 26.

To all whom it may concern:     Be it known that I, THADDEUS HYATT, of New York, in the county of New York and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating Pavement or Roof Plates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which--     Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper side of my non-dripping illuminating-plate. Fig. 2 is a like view of the lower side of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section upon line x x of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a like view upon line z z of same figure.     Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.     The object of my invention is to protect the interior of a space inclosed by illuminating-plates from the drip occasioned by the condensation of moisture upon the lower surface of said plates during changes in the humidity and temperature of the external air; and it consists in a shield of thin metal or other suitable material inclosing the lower side of the glazed frame or plate, and having light-openings flanged upward, so as to catch the dripping from the illuminating-lenses, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.     In the annexed drawings, A represents a metal plate, provided with a number of light-openings, a, each of which contains an illuminating-lens, B, that has preferably a concave lower surface. Placed just beneath the lower side of the plate A is a shield, C, which is provided with light-openings D, that correspond in number and position to the glazed openings a of

said plate, and are each provided with a surrounding flange or curb, d, that extends upward just within the line of the exterior of the lens B, so as to catch any drip which may be caused by condensation of moisture upon the lower side of said lens. The upper and side edges of the shield C are flanged upward, so as to retain the water which may drop from the plate, while at its lower edge said shield is provided preferably with a gutter, c, for the reception of said water, from which gutter the latter passes away through suitable pipes or channels. The shield C is attached upon the plate A, or in any other manner secured in position, and not only serves to prevent the drip of water from said plate into said apartment, but also adds materially to the comfort of the latter during the extremes of temperature, and air-space between said shield and plate increasing the ability of the same to resist the passage of heat or cold.     Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new is--     In combination with an illuminating-plate, a shield of thin metal, or other suitable material, inclosing the lower side of said plate, and having its light-openings flanged upward, so as to catch the drip from the illuminating-lenses, substantially as and for the purpose specified.     In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 26th day of July, 1873.
