diameter, or less or more, the squares between the channels appearing like
independent cut small glasses when the large plates are set in the metal
gratings, the object of this part of the invention being to render the
employment of large plates of glass admissible by making the surface safe
to be walked upon. I am aware that encircling rims of metal were cast upon the floor-plates represented in the drawings attached to the patent of March 7, 1871, granted to Wm. Dale, and that concrete was made use of to fill the sunken spaces between the rims, and that glasses were cemented within the rims over the light-holes; but the metal was not meant to become a portion of the foot-surface. My invention is the contrary of this, for, instead of paring away the metal at the top of the rims to avoid showing any among the concrete, I add to the |
quantity, when necessary, by an additional fillet, as shown at the top of the
curbs b b around the light-holes a a, Fig. 2. Having thus fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. Concreted illuminating-gratings set with glass, the foot-surface of which is made by combining metal with concrete or inlays, substantially as and for the purposes herein described and illustrated. 2. Concreted and inlaid channeled glass and illuminating-gratings made with the same, substantially as and for the purposes herein described and illustrated.
