articles are extremely brittle after the shaping stage, which has cooled the glass very quickly. It is therefore necessary to reheat them to a dull red, and allow them to cool gradually, before they are fit for use.

A bottle leer is simply a long firebrick tunnel heated from the end at which the bottles are introduced in large iron trays. When a tray is put in, it pushes its predecessors a little way
