Control of the dielectric dimensions
b) the metal parts
They have a role of mechanical connection. They are manufactured
by specialized firms: founderies and ironworks, or made by ourselves
when their manufacture calls for special techniques.
The insulator pins consist of steel chosen among French producers
for their consistent quality and absence of impurities. Those
most used by us contain 0.5 to 0.8% of manganese, less than 0.4%
silicon and a total percentage of phosphorus plus sulphur less
than 0.065%. The proportions of carbon varies from 0.3 to 0.5%,
depending on the mechanical resistance desired. The mechanical
resistance can also be modified by appropriate thermal treatment
(annealing or tempering and back). The pins are protected against
corrosion by a layer of zinc applied by hot galvanization, according
to the customers' specifications.
